What Are Porcelain Dental Crowns?
Porcelain dental crowns are tooth-shaped shells used to cover and protect a damaged or discolored tooth. They are custom-crafted to blend beautifully with the natural teeth. For patients who are missing a natural tooth, we offer implant-supported crowns, which offer many health and functional benefits.
Placement of Dental Crowns
The placement of dental crowns typically requires two visits to our Manhattan office: one to prepare the tooth and a second to place the crown. Dr. Rubinstein begins each visit by administering a local anesthetic. (Sedation dentistry may be an option.) During the first visit, if necessary, he reduces the natural structure of the tooth to accommodate the width of the crown. Then, he takes a mold of the teeth and mouth, which laboratory technicians use to custom-craft the crown. Finally, he places temporary caps, which the patient wears for about one week, until the dental crown is ready. At this point, the patient returns for the second visit, during which Dr. Rubinstein removes the caps and replaces them with the permanent crown. He bonds the crown to the tooth with dental-grade cement and assures its fit with the teeth and bite. The final result is a natural-looking and functional artificial tooth.
